Welcome To Kalama Washington
Kalama is a small town with a rich history, located in Cowlitz County on the Columbia River in Southwest Washington.
Kalama is a quaint little town with plenty of shops and restaurants. It also offers perks like professional sport events, concerts, theater, dance, and fine restaurants in the nearby cities of Portland and Seattle. Several excellent universities and medical institutions are close by as well.
The current population within city limits is 2,800 and about 5,500 including the surrounding unincorporated areas. Kalama is conveniently located along I-5, with three freeway exits. The Portland-Seattle rail connection parallels I-5 for both passengers and freight. An Amtrak station is located just minutes away in Kelso.
Along the river there is not only the industrial district but also recreational opportunities aplenty. The residential area lies up on the hills and cliffs above town with dramatic views overlooking the Columbia River.
Cowlitz County measures 1,139 square miles and has a moderate climate with a yearly average rainfall of 45 to 60 inches and an average temperature of 51°F, making it ideal for building year-round.
Community
Kalama has a strong community spirit with some families able to trace their roots back to the official incorporation in 1871. Several volunteer groups are active in the community, including Kalama Lions Club, AMALAK Woman’s Club, VFW, Envision Kalama, F.O.L.K. (Friends of the Kalama Library), Kalama Fair, Garden Club, and various sport organizations.
All throughout the year, community events are being held, from an Italian dinner in June, the Fair in July, a Car Show in August, an Art Event in September, Antique Wheel & Deal twice a year, bingo throughout the year, bazaars, and much more.
Antique District
Originally settled over 175 years ago, the town of Kalama maintains its historical appeal and tribute to the past through showcasing antiques and collectibles at a number of stores located in downtown area. The Kalama Antique District has been a main attraction to antique lovers and unique gift shoppers for several decades.
Accommodations / Restaurants
Kalama with its easy freeway access, offers several specialty restaurants; wonderful Mexican and Chinese restaurants, pizza parlors, deli’s with home-made fare, and American and fast food.
You can also enjoy that freshly brewed just-for-you cup of espresso. You can dine-in or take it out to enjoy your food in one of the many parks in Kalama. Spending the night / week is also an option at several lodging opportunities.
Recently a piece of history was made when the vampire movie Twilight was filmed in Kalama at the Kalama High School; “Where It’s Always Twilight”. With its alluring mystery and old brick architecture, Kalama High School became the perfect setting for ‘Twilight,’ the teen drama that continues to steal young girls’ hearts and turn the fantasy world of vampires into a pop culture phenomenon.
Come explore this charming small town and everything it has to offer, all without going through a traffic light!
